Delhi Metro is a rapid transport system in Delhi, which was built and operated by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC). The first section of Delhi Metro was opened on 24 December 2002. The Delhi Metro has a combination of elevated, at grade and underground lines.
In the coming years, many official committees of a number of government departments to consider issues relating to technology, alignment of the route and governmental jurisdiction.In 1984, the Delhi Development Authority and the Urban Arts Commission approached a proposal to develop a multi-modal transport system which would involve the construction of three subway riders Mass Rapid Transport, as well as increasing the city existing suburban railway and road networks. It became the second underground rapid transit system in India, after Kolkata.
The physical construction on the Delhi Metro started on 1 October 1998. After the previous problems experienced by the Calcutta Metro, which was very late and 12 times over budget due to "political interference and technical problems bureaucratic delays, "the DMRC was given full powers to hire people, decide on tenders and control of funds. As a result, construction proceeded smoothly, with the exception of a significant disagreement in 2000, where the Ministry of Railways have to use the broad gauge system despite the preference of the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to standard gauge. The first line opened on 24 December 2002 and all of Phase I of the project was completed in December 2005 on budget and almost three years ahead of schedule, an achievement he described as "nothing short of a miracle."
Delhi Metro rail has reduced the traffic in Delhi to some extent and the pollution level has certainly declined. Construction of Delhi Metro network is still underway in other parts of Delhi and 1st Phase of Metro network is expected to cover all of Delhi in 2010. Delhi Metro Route
Delhi Metro are currently running three routes within the Delhi city, which includes both underground and above ground railways. The routes are running the red line, blue line and yellow line. The yellow line (the underground sections) Vishwavidyala connects to the Central Secretariat, while the blue line runs between IP Extension and Dwarka. Red Line connects Shahdara to Rithala and the intersection of the road in the Kashmir Gate, also a point of change to the yellow line. Rajiv Chowk or the Connaught Place is about to change to yellow line and travelers from the blue line. |
